HACH chemical in Colorado, USA has very easy to use water quality kits. They are supplied by the states often to determine the health of a water body to "stream teams" that are made up of local community members who go through trainig. Not only are chemical parameters vital to determination of the health of a water body, but also evaluation of the macroinvertebrates.

temp,Ph,turbidity,hardness,chloride,nitrate,iron,flouride,residual chlorine,dissolved oxygen,phosphorous,ammonia,alkalinity, coliform bacteria-H2S method
